Small Business SEO-How To Find Your Keywords

So in my last post you discovered the importance of keywords for a small business SEO campaign and how Google uses them to match your Keyword Tools website with your buyers search request.

Again, just a refresher:

Keywords are the cornerstone of your online marketing campaign because they’re the commercial intent of your buyer. Its whats going on in their mind.

So the logical question is, how do you find your keywords, right?

So below are 5 ways to uncover the keywords your buyers are typing into the search engines to find your business right NOW!

Free Google keyword tool- This is my favorite free tool. I use a “paid” keyword tool but the information it  pulls is from the free Google keyword tool anyway. The great thing about this tool is you can either start with a keyword or keyword phrase or your website’s URL and and the tool will show you related searched terms. It also shows you how many people are searching for the terms, amount spend by Google advertisers for the term and search trend just to name a few.

Free Wordtracker tool-This is another free keyword tool (  They also offer a paid version). The difference between the free Wordtracker tool and the Google keyword tool is Google shows only keyword data from Google searches.    Wordtracker pulls search results from all the major metacrawlers.

Spying on your competition- I love doing this, with one caveat, make sure you’re only looking at the competitors ranked HIGHER than you. Your competitors have already done the work for you. Now you just have to take a look at their website and find what terms they’re optimizing for. Take a look at their title tags, and H1 tags and articles on their website.

Watch your Google Analytics- First, you can’t run an SEO campaign without measuring your results. Google Analytics is a free website monitoring tool. It measures things like website traffic, the time your visitors spend on your site and a bunch of other important metrics.  Now one of the metrics you must pay attention to is the “keyword  metric tool.” Google Analytics actually shows you the words your buyers are typing into the search engines to land on your web pages.

Your Brain- Yep, believe it or not, your brain is still the best keyword tool in your tool box. Sometimes business owners forget this. A great way to uncover keywords is to simply optimize your website for terms your buyers might type into the search engines to find you. For example, Philadelphia Accountant, Accountant in Philadelphia PA or Philadelphia area Accountant.

So now that you know how to find and use keywords it’s time to start creating some content around these words and phrases.  In my next post you’ll discover how to do this…the RIGHT way!
