Small Business Email Marketing Secrets Revealed!

In fact, this is one of the biggest reasons small businesses fail and leave thousands of dollars on the table.

One of the easiest and most cost effective ways to build a relationship with your buyers is through your small business email marketing campaigns.

The problem is most business owners do not leverage this opportunity.

There is a lot of misconceptions about email marketing.

So many business owners are afraid of ticking off their customers by sending emails.

Now don’t get me wrong, this can happen.

There is definitely a RIGHT WAY and a WRONG WAY to run your email marketing campaigns.

Luckily, last week I was invited to hear Tom Kulzer, CEO and founder of Aweber speak on small business email marketing strategies.

Aweber is an email software program that easily lets you obtain customers names and emails from your website. The software then allows you to automatically send email newsletters and auto-responders to your customer list.

Tom is a guy who knows a thing or two about email marketing.

So I’d like to share a few tips I discovered from Tom’s talk.

1. The average e-mail open rate is approximately 15%. ( This is the rate your customers actually click on the email to read it)

2.The average opt-in rate is approximately 3-15%. ( This is the rate your prospects visit your website and enter their name and email into an email capture form)

3. You’re striving for a undeliverable rate less than 2% ( This represents the e-mails that do not get delivered to the intended recipient)

Tom also shared a few ways you can improve upon these results.

1. Set expectations. Make sure you’re clear with your customers. Tell them what you’re giving them in exchange for their email and stick to it. You’ll also want to be clear as to how often you’ll email them. Tell them exactly what type of content you’ll be sending. Setting expectations up front makes it less likely you’ll tick your customers off.

2.Be consistent. Small business email marketing campaigns must be consistent. If you send emails once every three months you’re going to lose subscribers. If your customers don’t hear from you on a consistent basis they’ll forget who you are and unsubscribe. Or worse yet, click the spam button.

( By the way, spam NO LONGER means you did not ask for the email. SPAM now means you no longer want emails from a particular person. So when you say ” But they signed up to get my emails”, it doesn’t matter anymore.)

3.Keep your subject lines short and use curiosity. The mind hates emptiness. A short curiosity driven headline will increase your open rates. Just make sure the content in your email fulfills the promise you set in your subject line. One other insider tip Tom suggested was to use dates in your subject line. Subject lines with dates in them have a greater open rate than those without dates.

These are just a few  small business email marketing strategies you can use in your business.
