If you’re doing your own SEO it would make sense for you to understand how exactly the search engines work.SEO-Search-Engine-optimization

So today, I hope to explain in simple terms how the search engines crawl and index your web pages.

First, you’ll want to think of the Internet as a road map.

Imagine you’re on vacation in a strange city and you’re on a “site seeing” tour.

The only way you have of getting around town is your trusty road map.

Each tourist attraction is connected by a series of roads and it’s up to you to pick which roads you’ll take to get to each attraction.

Once you arrive, you get out of the car, look around, take some pictures and head off to your next destination.

Now you’ll probably take another road out of the attraction to your next destination.

Well it’s very similar online except the “tourists” are search engine spiders, the “roadways” are links and the  “attractions” are web pages.

Make sense?

The search engines spiders ( automated robots sent out by the search engines to  gather information about web pages) find web pages, pdf’s, images and other documents.

They then gather the code of each document and store them in massive hard drives to be recalled when needed in a search.

This is similar to you as the tourist hopping out of your car, taking pictures and storing them in your photo album to be pulled out the next time you want to remember your trip.

Now the search engines have HUGE collection of data centers to handle all this information, much larger than your photo albums and picture frames!

So there you have it, a simple way to understand how the search engines crawl and find data online.

Next time I’ll explain how search engines then retrieve this information and rank websites.

Oh, one other thing, and this is important so you’ll want to pay attention.

There are typically many more roads leading to popular tourist or city destinations right?

It would make sense that the more popular a place is, the more roads are built to get you there, right?

Well when you think about this online, the biggest and most popular websites ( tourist attractions) have the most roads ( links) leading to it.

More roads ( links)  leading to YOUR attraction ( Your website) means more tourist buying stuff from YOUR gift shop!

Make sense?
