Fat SEO Hog Gets Slaughtered!

As a Philadelphia SEO consultant I have a saying I like to use, ” Be a little pig because big pigs get slaughterer!” This  exactly what happened to me with one of my SEO consulting clients this past week.

You see, when I first started working with Bob Maunsell,  “The Security Marketing Guru” his website was NO where to be found in Google for his preferred keyword phrase.

Now Bob is one of my favorite clients because he loves to try new marketing strategies with his website and trusts my judgment as the SEO expert.  He understands the importance of running a direct response marketing style website as opposed to a “pretty” electronic post card website most small businesses use.

So anyway, after I designed and properly optimized his new website,  helped him with his online marketing strategy and launched the mother of all SEO campaigns,it only took Bob’s website to reach the first page of Google for his MAIN keyword phrase in about 30 days.

Now that may seem like a long time but Bob’s domain name was brand new and I am competing against sixty six MILLION other websites in Google for Bob’s keyword phrase.

Now I hear a lot of so called SEO guru’s out there touting their skills but I’d like to challenge anyone to rank a site on the first page of Google with sixty six MILLION competing pages!

Anyway, Bob’s site was hanging around position 5 or 6 in Google on the first page out of a possible 10 positions.  And this is where the story begins…you see I became a big fat pig and Google slaughtered me…find out how…

I just made a few simple changes to Bob’s title tags.  Bob and I both agreed the new title I came up with was a winner and sounded much better than the one we were using.   In addition I did additional keyword research and found some other really nice keywords to add to his meta title tag description.

Well to my dismay Bob’s site started to drop off the first page of Google like a lead balloon!

Now I didn’t want to panic as we both believed the title was a winner but when his site finally bottomed out on page 8, we couldn’t wait anymore and we changed it back!

Now the good news is it only took a few days to float back up to page 1 of google and it settled at position #3…not too shabby huh?

So there are a few lessons here.

First, its ok to test things out but make sure you only test one thing at a time. Don’t make too many changes at once in case things go south on you. This way you can just put things back to the way they were if things don’t pan out as you hoped.

Second, don’t be a big pig. Hey, position #3 on the first page of Google for a keyword phrase where I’m competing with over sixty six million competing sites in Google is pretty darn good if you ask me!  I let my ego get the best of me but at the same time my intentions were to get my clients site to take over the number over spot for his keyword phrase.

You can’t fault me for trying can you?

So now what I’ll do is leave his on page SEO optimization alone and start focusing way more on his off page SEO optimization by building links back to his site and other traffic generating techniques to really bolster his site so it grows more naturally!

This is the life of a Philadelphia SEO consultant!

Now get busy,

Bill Parlaman
