Outrageous Marketing-Has It Gone Too Far?

Outrageous Marketing Clown

Don't Be A Marketing Clown

When did Twitter and Facebook become a dumping ground for old quotes?

When did marketing become the battle between video editing software programs?

Do people really think you’re accountant called you crazy?

How is cutting 25% off all your crap a gift to me?

If you send 10 different emails asking me to buy your stuff, could you at least change a sentence or two in your email?  I mean come on, put a little effort into it would ya?

I think this whole notion of ” Outrageous” Marketing and advertising has gotten way out of hand.

Marketing has become a game of who can scream the loudest.

I think business owners have forgotten they still need to offer meaningful information and good products.

The problem with these strategies is most people see right through them.

All these “hi-jinks” scream, ” I WANT YOU TO BUY SOMETHING”

Why do you think advertorial ads work so well?  Because advertorial ads look like informational articles in the newspaper or magazine you’re reading. People read them with their guards down.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for cutting through the clutter with your marketing. I just think there’s a right way and a wrong way to do it.

Are you really going to buy something from me because I quoted something Aristotle said in 300 BC?

I point this out because you might be a business owner struggling to figure out how to use all these different mediums to market your business.

I’m just trying to save you from putting a big red ball on your nose and slapping big floppy shoes on your feet.

If you’re genuine, honest and give your buyers solid information they’ll be much more likely to buy from you.

So next time you post a Facebook message, Tweet or writer a blog post, ask yourself the following three questions:

  • How will this make my buyers life better?
  • How does this help ease their pain?
  • What problem will this solve for my buyer?

Everything you do in your marketing should have a purpose. Don’t do something just for the sake of doing something.

Bill, I agree 100% with your post. How many of us have heard at some point, especially if we’re married, STOP YELLING, I can’t hear what you’re saying? the same goes for reaching potential customers. Too many people imitate others with the effort to duplicate the same success. It won’t work because it’s not original at all. One of the people I follow closely said when your competition zigs you zag. Being original is being different. And in this day and age we are in, originality is a must. I believe the challenge is getting your customers attention with a soft voice, not the screaming forceful type that will turn people away. The three points you have bought up all resolve the customers problems, not the other way around that says “hey I’m broke so buy my product so I can be rich” type of message. The french marketer Christian Godefroy says it best: You have to give something to the world before you can take something back from the world. With that said, thanks for giving.

  2. Thanks Edwin! I agree with you about outrageous marketing principles! And as you know, I’m a HUGE fan of Christian Godefroy and your quote hit the nail right on the head.
