Keyword Cannibalization-How To Avoid Keyword Cannibalization

Keyword Cannibalization often occurs in your website when you fail to create a quality SEO plan for your business."keyword cannibalization example"

What usually happens here is a business owner starts publishing multiple web pages on their website targeting a single keyword or keyword phrase.

In most cases the business owner is completely unaware this is happening.

Ultimately what winds up happening is you’ll have several web pages attacking the same keyword in your title tags, header tags and in your content.

At first glance this doesn’t appear to be a problem, but what happens is you’re actually confusing the search engine spiders.

Let me share an example with you.

Let’s say you’re a landscaper and you offer a “weed elimination service” to your customers.

If you publish several “weed elimination” articles to your website, you’ll FORCE Google to make a decision as to which page is the most relevant.

Remember Google does not look at your site as a whole. Google will not rank your site higher in the search engines just because you’ve published a bunch of articles on one topic.

Now if you’ve been following my most recent tips, you’ll see just how the SEO blue print completely eliminates keyword cannibalization.

For example, let’s say your primary keyword is “weed elimination.”

The first thing you’ll want to do is create your  “money page” around this keyword. ( Remember your “money page” is where you’ll want to funnel all your buyers and where you’ll have your call to action or offer)

After you create this page, make a note of the URL on your SEO Blue Print along with your primary keyword.

Next, head over to Google and type “weed elimination” into the search box and click on  “Google’s wonder wheel.” ( I share an example of how to do this in yesterday’s post on creating SEO content)

You’ll see in the example below I have already done this for you. The red arrow is pointing to your primary keyword and your related keyword phrases are highlighted in yellow:

"Avoid Keyword Cannibalization Google Wonder Wheel"

Make note of your related keyword phrases under your primary keyword on your SEO blue print.

Now what you’ll want to do is create content around each of these keyword phrases highlighted in yellow and link them back to your money page URL.

By creating one page around your primary keyword supported by other related keywords, you’ll completely eliminate the dangers of keyword cannibalization.

Now you’re the one calling the shots and telling Google which web page YOU want indexed and ranked in the search engines!

I hope you can see just how powerful this strategy really is!

Now go dominate Google, Bill Parlaman

Bill, can you do a post on the follwoing:

    1. why Adobe Flash will kill SEO efforts and how to do it properly? I am in the process of upgrading my site one step at a time and adding an MP3 player is on the list but it requires a flash plug in.

    2. Mac vs. PC for website development. Pros and Cons on each one. Thanks.

  2. Hi Edwin,

Thanks for your questions. I’ll be happy to share with you my opinions on Flash and how it effects your SEO. As far as you second question I’m not sure I understand. Are you talking about building a website with a Mac v. a PC or are you looking for the pros and cons between the two?

    Thanks,

    Bill
