As you may know, I’m a huge fan of using WordPress blogs and business blogging as an SEO strategy.
In fact, one of the first recommendations I usually make to my SEO consulting clients is to set up a business blog right away.
Now for most of my clients who are information marketers or local bricks and mortar business owners, coming up with blogging topics is pretty easy, however, I’m often asked by my ecommerce clients how they should go about publishing content to their business blogs.
I mean after all, if you’re simply selling “widgets” from your website how exciting is it really, and why in the world would someone want to read about “widgets” anyway, right?
Well today I’m going to help my e commerce friends with some creative ways to create blog content. However, this information can be used by anyone regardless of your business.
In fact, some of the best idea’s I’ve ever received came from businesses completely unrelated to my own. I just took those ideas and molded them for my business.
So if you’re an information marketer or brick and mortar business owners selling products or services, you’ll want to pay attention here too, OK?
So, without any further ado, here are the 10 Tips business blogging tips for ecommerce businesses…and you information marketers too!
1. Be sure to EDUCATE your customers. This is the number one rule! Most people visit websites to get educated and learn more about a product, service or business. By blogging about your products you’re helping to educate your customers on the best ways to use your products. Remember, you must educate them first!
2. Help your customers buy more stuff from you. This is a great way to keep your clients coming back to you time and time again. Write about accessories, upgrades and replacement parts and how they help the overall performance of your product. Be careful here, the aim is to educate and build relationships with your customers, don’t sell too hard. By the end of the post, your customer should feel like jumping through their computer screen and buying more stuff!
3. Write “theme” related posts. One way Google is changing is by ranking sites higher that are based around themes. The geeky word for this is “LSI” or latent semantic indexing. The search engines will rank a site based on the theme rather than keywords. This helps the site look more natural in the search engine’s eyes. For example, lets say you sell rabbit cages, you could blog about rabbit care, rabbit breeding, indoor rabbit cages vs. outdoor rabbit cages, you get the idea, right?
4. Give your customers a way to communicate with you. Invite your customers to ask questions or comment on your products. Then, answer the questions in the form of a blog post. Also, when publishing content on your blog, encourage your customers to comment making sure to thank them for commenting so you create two-way communication. ( Do you think a big dumb store could do this? I think not!)
5.Post Client Testimonials. Make your customers a celebrity. Interview a happy client on how they have used your product or service and how it’s helped them. One of the best types of testimonials is to ask them the “before and after” question. Here’s what I mean, ” So Mrs. Jones, before you used our product what was your life like? Now, since you’ve been using our product how has your life improved?”
6. Video Your product. This is a great way to add content to your business blog and educate your customers too. Film yourself opening the product as if you were the customer. Show them how it looks and how it feels. Walk them through the process step by step. Show them how to hit the ground running with their new product. Make sure to post your videos on your blog and on various video directories like YouTube and Viddler. It’s always a great idea to get the audio from your video transcribed to add to your blog.
7.Start spreading the news. Are you launching a new product or improving an existing one? Your business blog is a great way to announce the news. Once you publish your content do a little rewriting and submit it as a press release!
8. Product Reviews. If you have a certain category of products say a low end, middle and high end you could write a blog post on the features and benefits of each product. Compare one to the other. Again, this would be another great opportunity to video the comparisons and distribute the videos all over the net.
9.Surprise benefits. You know your products and services better than anyone else so why not spill the beans? Share hidden or unexpected benefits of using your products with your customers.
10.What’s in the news? How can you relate your product or service to things that are going on in the news? Can you relate your product to a sports star or celebrity? For example, lets say you sell water purification systems. One of the big buzz words these days is going “Green”. Why not blog about ways to help the environment and reduce green house gases by eliminating plastic water bottles? Now don’t stop there, you could do an entire blog category on going “Green” in your home. Might you find additional business opportunities here?
Just because you might think you sell a boring product or something nobody really wants to read about doesn’t mean you can’t be creative.
Remember to link from your blog pages to your product pages of your main site. This will help increase links to your web pages which will ultimately help your web page rank higher.
Also, the more content you add about your business, the more likely the search engines will find it. You’ll quickly establish yourself as the go to expert in your niche or industry while building relationships with customers who absolutely love you!
